Christmastime in Europe is one of the most magical
times to head to this amazing continent. Europe is
rich with history and culture, and it all seems to
come alive during the month of Christmas. Even
though the weather can be quite unforgiving and
cold, Christmas will leave you with warm and
wonderful memories. Thanks to the many festivals,
traditions, and celebrations, Christmas is one of the
best times to visit Europe.
One of the biggest highlights of celebrating
Christmas in a European country is the amazing
culinary delights that you~ll experience. Each
country has its own specialty foods that it prepares
for the holidays. In Germany you can experience
the pleasure of eating Stollen, which is a Christmas
cake that is baked through the month of December
to be enjoyed on Christmas Eve. Other countries
have their own mouthwatering foods for you to
enjoy. And don~t forget to bring home chocolate
which abounds in all countries for the Christmas
season.
Christmas traditions in Europe differ from North
American traditions. In most European countries
Santa Claus comes in the early evening on
Christmas Eve, not in the middle of the night. Most
families go to an early church service were a candle
light ceremony takes place, consisting mainly of
beautiful Christmas carols. Then a wonderful meal
is served followed by sweet treats and the opening
of gifts. Christmas Eve is a very busy time for
European families.
The Christmas celebration continues on December
25th, when friends and family eat a large evening
meal. The day is spent visiting with friends and
eating, while children show off their new toys.
There is no rush as cities close down to celebrate
Christmas.
Christmas season is extremely busy for travelers, so
if you are hoping to spend Christmas in Europe this
year, book as soon as possible. Not only do many
people head to Europe to spend time with family
that still live there, but more and more people are
discovering what a great vacation Christmas in
Europe can be. Even those who have no family
members are scrambling to get flights booked for
this season. Be sure to book any flights well in
advance since this can be such a popular time to
travel abroad.
You may find that flights to Europe are cheaper if
you travel in the week after New Years, since by
then Christmas is over and cities are getting back
into the groove of daily life. You can count on the
holiday celebration lasting throughout the month of
December so no matter time of the month that you
go you~ll be able to participate in the many
Christmas activities.
